Nimman hao!! Fly to Shanghai today. You will be transferred to your hotel when you arrive (check-in after 1500 hrs). Shanghai is China's largest city and global financial center. Its heart is the Bund, a famous waterfront promenade adorned with colonial-era buildings. Combining 21st-century architecture with old-world character, Shanghai pulsates with the pulse of new China. Across the Huangpu River rises the futuristic skyline of the Pudong district, including the 632-meter-high Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
Today after breakfast, proceed to guided city tour of Shanghai with photo stops at the Oriental Pearl TV Tower with its distinctive pink spheres and at the Yu Yuan Garden, a traditional Chinese park with beautiful pavilions, miniature lakes and bridges. You will visit the famous Jade Buddha Temple, which was built in 1882. This temple has two Jade statues of the Sakyamuni Buddha and houses various ancient sculptures, rare paintings and Buddhist scriptures.
This morning you will fly to Xi'an. It is the capital of Shaanxi province and the largest city in northwestern China. Xi'an, the imperial center of China for 2,000 years, is now a vibrant, modern city with many interesting historical sites and is a great place to visit. When you arrive in Xi'an, stop to take a photo of Xi'an's City Wall, built during the Tang Dynasty. You will also pass the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (also known as the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda), built in 652 AD. A symbol of old-time Xi'an, the pagoda is a well-preserved ancient building and a sacred place for Buddhists. Spend the night in Xi'an.
Today starts with a tour of Xi'an. See the Terracotta Warriors, a collection of over 6,000 terracotta soldiers, officials, horses and carriages depicting the army of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. You'll learn all about this incredible archaeological discovery, which was discovered in 1976 after being buried for 2,000 years by farmers digging a well. The Terracotta Army was built next to the tomb of China's first emperor as an afterlife protector for the emperor. Spend the night in Xi'an.
Go to the railway station and then take the high-speed train (about 6 hours) to Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China and the second most populous city in the world. Watch the landscape change from farmland and villages to industrial cities and urban sprawl. On arrival we will check-in to your hotel (after 1500 hrs). Spend the night in Beijing.
This morning you will visit a section of the Great Wall and spend some time exploring, taking photos and learning the history of this mighty site (and view). An incredible piece of engineering, the wall stretches 6,000km westwards from the mountain ranges north of Beijing. It was originally built to protect the Chinese empires from the 'barbarians' to the north and even though it failed in this purpose, it is still undoubtedly one of the country's most remarkable achievements and an iconic destination. As you stroll along the wall, you will often feel like you have the whole wall to yourself, stretching into the hills for an almost endless distance. Sitting on this incredible engineering feat and surveying the stunning surrounding countryside is an unforgettable experience. Afterwards stop for a photo opportunity in the 'Olympic Park' - the symbolic stadium where the 2008 Olympics were held. In the afternoon, your tour continues to the Summer Palace and its vast gardens, where the imperial court resided during the summer. Beijing, the capital of the world's most populous country, is rapidly losing its historic face to modernity. However, there are still many places where you can gain a good idea of the country's ancient past as well as understand China's contemporary culture. Spend the night in Beijing.
Today you'll head to the city center - Tiananmen Square (travel by metro and local bus). Perhaps most famous outside the country for the 1989 massacre (and the iconic photo of a man standing in front of a tank), this square - considered the world's largest downtown square - is the symbolic center of Chinese power. Surrounded by Mao's portrait, Mao's Mausoleum, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum, and the Gate of Heavenly Peace with its elaborate flag-raising and lowering ceremonies at dawn and dusk, it's a place of pilgrimage for Chinese tourists, who consider it the heart of their country. From here you'll enter the vast Forbidden City. Built more than 500 years ago and off-limits to the general public at almost all times, it's a truly amazing place. Beijing is huge and full of sights - as long as your hotel is centrally located, a walk in any direction will bring you all kinds of wonderful surprises. Spend the night in Beijing.
